Stand fan - for a fresh breeze on hot summer days
Since air conditioners are the exception rather than the rule, stand fans are the next best option for surviving hot summer days and nights. They provide a fresh breeze and cooling by allowing the air flow to circulate the air, which provides cooling when it comes into contact with our skin. Thanks to the different models and setting options, your new stand fan can also be adapted exactly to your needs and its future place of use.
Which stand fan suits you? The different models at a glance
True to their name, they all have a stand base - and usually an adjustable telescopic rod with which you can lock the height individually. Also, the fan head will usually move freely around about a 180 degree angle if you want it to. This allows you to better adjust the air flow to your personal preferences.
The classic variant uses motor-driven blades, which are set in a barred housing - so you don't accidentally come into contact with the rotating blades. Such a stand fan often comes with a remote control, so you don't have to get up from the sofa or bed to change the intensity or rotation of the head, for example.
An alternative to this is a stand fan with water cooling, which is often referred to as a mist fan. Thanks to the water cooling, these models increase the humidity and create a cooler air flow. They are worth considering if the air in your rooms is very dry in summer.
Another option are column fans, which, unlike the classic fan, no longer have a central rotor, but instead several blade heads stacked vertically on top of each other. Due to their elongated shape, they are particularly recommended if you only have limited space available. They are also suitable for use as stand fans that need to be quiet.
Features and characteristics of a stand fan
The rotor diameter should correlate with the room size. Diameters of around 30 cm are well suited for standard rooms, while for larger rooms a diameter of 40 to 50 cm is recommended to generate a stronger air flow. The same applies to the power: 30 to 40 watts are sufficient for small rooms, and 50 watts and more are suitable for larger areas.
If you want the stand fan to be quiet, for example because you want to use it while you are sleeping, the volume level specified by the manufacturer gives you an important guide. 40 dB is fine for sleeping and less loud than a normal conversation (around 55 dB).
If you want to use the stand fan with a remote control, then this must also be included. Some models even have their own app. If you want to reposition the fan more frequently, it should have a light weight or attached rollers to move it easily.
In terms of design, the colour should match your interior. Since most stand fans come in black or white, this is usually not a problem.
