The auna "Connect Soundchef MKII" kitchen substructure radio is securely packed and delivered in a double, sturdy outer box. Of course, the scope of delivery includes the substructure radio itself, its mounting plate for screwing under the wall cabinet or shelf together with the corresponding fastening screws, the remote control, the required power supply unit and an antenna for FM or DAB+ reception. Also included is an optional bracket that is intended for mounting a separately available tablet holder. This can be screwed to the back of the radio so that no further mounting holes are required in the respective cabinet. Furthermore, an audio cable with two jack plugs is also included, with the help of which external devices can be connected to the substructure radio and, of course, an operating manual, which has been written in both German and English. From a purely visual point of view, the radio itself leaves a high-quality impression: In my opinion, the front panel of the radio, which in my opinion looks quite elegant and is clearly designed, fits perfectly into our kitchen, as does the housing with its light wood finish. Why it is listed under the color name "black" is not entirely clear to me. In my opinion, an additional "gadget" is the integrated "ambient lighting" directed downwards, which in our case also "throws" some additional light onto the worktop or the work area if required. From a functional point of view, this radio offers plenty of opportunities for enjoying music in the kitchen, although in my opinion it could of course also be used in other rooms, somewhere under it to save space. In addition to listening to standard FM radio stations, these can also be heard digitally, with improved sound and absolutely noise-free thanks to DAB+. In our case, the real reason for buying it was actually the Internet connection, which makes it possible to choose your personally favorite station from an enormously diverse selection of Internet radio stations from all over the world and listen to it accordingly. The connection to the home Internet takes place via WLAN, which on the one hand works smoothly and on the other hand makes the often rather cumbersome laying of a network cable superfluous. In this regard, the connection can be established either via WPS or manually. In addition to Internet radio and FM / DAB+, the radio is also compatible with Spotify, but of course with a corresponding subscription. Otherwise, you can also play your own music files from a USB stick or you can connect the radio to your smartphone via Bluetooth, after which the radio can also be used as a hands-free device or you can also play a radio or Internet radio station via your smartphone it is possible. In principle, the operation of the device is not particularly difficult, but in my opinion it requires a bit of routine in a few points: For example, I personally find it a bit unusual that the rotary knob has to be pressed a little longer to switch off the radio, although this is done by remote control done with a short press. This is particularly surprising (for us), as switching off the rotary knob on our other device of the same brand is done as usual by briefly pressing it. In my opinion, reaching some menu functions, for example for the basic settings regarding the sound, is not necessarily self-explanatory. Of course, you only have to set these once, otherwise they will probably not be needed very often anyway, which is why this should not be seen as a fundamental disadvantage. In my opinion, the sound of the radio is very good, provided that the default settings "Normal", "Flat", "Jazz", "Rock", "Movie", "Classic", "Pop" and "News" are left lets: In my opinion, all of these sound a little thin and only a little voluminous or they differ only slightly from each other. However, there is the option of being able to make your own settings for "Bass" and "Treble": In my case, I "turned the bass up all the way" and the "Treble" settings only slightly increased. In my opinion, the result is quite right impressive, balanced sound considering the compact size of the device. Incidentally, the radio definitely gives sound settings made in this way without booming or even "rattling". This is not least due to the solid construction of the device itself, which has a housing made of stable MDF. The two broadband loudspeakers, each three inches in size, and ultimately also the existing bass reflex port ensure a powerful sound. The device has storage options for each operating mode (FM / DAB+ and Internet radio), you can call up your preferred station, once set and saved, at any time using the station buttons. Of course, this can be done by remote control as well as directly on the device. The search for a specific Internet radio station, for example, can be carried out by region or country or by a specific genre (folk / pop / rock etc.), and the station can also be searched for or found directly after entering the respective station name if required. All in all, we are very satisfied with the device and enthusiastic about its wide range of possible uses. Above all, its tonal qualities, as already mentioned, are more than convincing. So in the end, a full five stars for this product in terms of my rating! So I can definitely and with a clear conscience give a purchase recommendation for this kitchen under-cabinet radio!
