Impressive sound, rich undistorted bass and clean, precise highs, with a consistently harmonious frequency spectrum. The players: - Audi Cabriolet, built in 1995 - JVC KD SH 9104 car radio, also showing its age, built in 2004 - two-way broadband loudspeaker at the front, 10cm installed in the dashboard in the original holes, combined with - 13cm bass loudspeaker in the door. The two-way system was converted to 3-channel operation using an external crossover. - at the rear there is an MB-Quart 20cm three-way system from the 90s, with the midrange and tweeter in the side panel and the bass from the trunk. Up until now the loudspeakers were powered by the car radio's internal amplifier (4*50W). However, as this quickly reaches its load limit, a decent power amplifier should take over the work. This power amplifier is attractive due to the good price/performance ratio and the many setting options for 4-channel operation. When I unpacked the power amplifier, I was very pleased with the robust and heavy design. You have a lot in your hand, the two narrow sides are equipped with connections and controls. On one side are the speaker connections and the power supply. The screw terminals are good quality, I connected 10 mm² power supply cables and used 4 mm² or 1.5 mm² speaker cables. It was no problem at all to get them under the terminals. On the other side, the RCA cables (the preamplifier output signals of the car radio) are connected. There is enough space to accommodate high-quality plugs. After switching on, the level adjustment begins. I turned the controls down and left everything at the standard level. Set the volume to a normal value and now set the front speakers to a normal volume. Then adjust the rear ones until a balanced sound is achieved. Now turn it up and optimize the capabilities of the weaker front speakers using the high-pass filter. When it gets louder, the front speakers should not stand out due to rattling bass. The sound result is now completely different to the previous one, which used the car radio's internal amplifiers. A lot of work, but absolutely worth it. The remote control supplied sensibly only controls the front speakers, so you can quickly and easily make any adjustments. There are a variety of setting options that I would now like to briefly mention (from left to right): - Switch between 2 and 4-channel operation - Front Gain to control the volume of the front speakers - Below that, Rear Gain to control the volume of the rear speakers - Then, in combination with the frequency adjuster and the filter type switch, also front and rear. If the switch is in the middle (Full), the frequency control has no function. LPF means that only low frequencies are allowed through; the frequency is set using the control. This setting should be used for bass channels. Conversely, the HPF filter lets the high frequencies above the set crossover frequency through. Ideal for broadband speakers that cannot handle the low frequencies and are overloaded by them. - Finally, a bass boost for the front and rear can be activated separately with a 6dB or 12dB increase. I think that this amplifier is top-notch, offers plenty of power and is very well made. I installed the amplifier in the compartment under the steering wheel because there were no alternatives, and this is where the amplifier's only weakness comes into play: the audible fan. But who else installs an amplifier there? But you can't hear the fan while driving, and as soon as the music starts playing, it's no longer important anyway. ;)
